So about half my job is client-facing, either through email, IMs or Telephone.
The last few months, since going from Kevin to Emily at work (actually my work names are different, we use pseudonyms due to the fact we all pick up a weird level of internet celebrity by virtue of what we do and who we do it for) have been educational. Now I haven’t learned anything I didn’t know on an intellectual level but there’s a difference between knowing something and experiencing it firsthand.
Kevin was respected for his technical and engineering acumen by clients.
Emily’s technical knowledge is dismissed and questioned at every possible turn.
Kevin had a reputation as the place where the buck stops. Usually when I laid down the law with a client that was the end of it.
However when Emily lays down the law, there is a 90% chance that the client will immediately ask to talk to a Supervisor. (And be sorely disappointed.)
Kevin had to deal with all of 3 clients ever flirting with him.
Emily gets flirty comments constantly, no matter how professional the client is supposed to be. I can be in the middle of troubleshooting a widespread outage via IM with some other company’s NoC Manager and they’ll throw in “I bet you have a pretty voice.” (True story.) Similar things happen all the time.
I know, this will shock nobody, but you know… fascinating and weird to see it in action..
