in response to this, a little late, but I wanted to have my hair freshly purpled.
Me and my computer, The Neverender, a 2.3ghz AMD with 4 gigs of memory, running Crunchbang Linux. I learned to build computers by building this machine. I started running this particular distribution of Linux on my laptop last year, and solely sometime in January when I got a rather nasty MBR rootkit on the desktop. I started out dual-booting off two drives to try and remove the ick, then just to rescue all my artwork. I gave up on the Windows install when that drive died. I never looked back when, not only did Crunchbang work just fine with my tablet, but I also found ways to make GIMP work just as well as the Corel Painter I’d been using for years.
Linux is a challenge. It’s consistent challenging, and I am constantly learning new things because of it, it keeps me sharp. I understand better how hardware and software work together after learning the very different file structures. I’m teaching myself to program in Python, and learning how networking works with (free!) tools like Wireshark and nmap. It is damn near impossible to make this thing fall over. And if you think about the nature of open source software? All of it is built for the love of what it does, what it can do.
Linux is not just for neckbeads; it’s for the curious, the control freaks, and those who never want to be satisfied with their toolset.
My Girlfriend’s Fandom is Linux. Yes. Not just yes, but FUCK YES.
